PREP ROUNDUP: Burnette contributes two ways as Collins Hill baseball edges Norcross 6-5

NORCROSS — Travis Burnette had two hits and two RBIs and picked up the win on the mound as Collins Hill edged Norcross 6-5 in the season-opening baseball game for both teams Monday at Norcross.

Burnette (1-0) was succeeded on the mound by Ben Neadow, who picked up the save for the Eagles (1-0). Collins Hill also got a hit and an RBI each from Kody Slate and Sam Horn.


Discovery 13, Central Gwinnett 3, 5 innings

LAWRENCEVILLE — Mark McGuire was the winning pitcher and had a big day at the plate as Discovery opened the 2019 season with a 13-3 win over Central Gwinnett at home Monday.

McGuire (1-0) threw two innings and finished with two triples and four RBIs offensively.

Luis Suarez also added two hits and drove in three runs for the Titans (1-0), while Tyrique Leathers-Stone threw two innings and struck out two and Aaron Oesterle had a double at the plate and struck out the side in the top of the fifth to close out the game.

Grayson 9, Peachtree Ridge 3

LOGANVILLE — John Anderson had a big day pitching and hitting as Grayson opened its season with a 9-3 win at home against Peachtree Ridge on Monday.

Anderson did not get the pitching decision, but struck out eight in four innings of work and added a pair of hits offensively.

Nick Brown (1-0) struck out three in two innings of work to get the win, while Josh Carriere paced the offense with a double and three RBIs as the Rams (1-0) took advantage of some sloppy work in the field by the Lions (0-1).

Duluth 14, Shiloh 1

SNELLVILLE — Jose Jennings and James Sattler combined for a strong outing on the mound as Duluth rolled past Shiloh 14-1 for a road victory Monday.

Jennings struck out six batters in three innings, while Sattler (1-0) pick up the win with two shutout innings out of the bullpen.

Deshaun Richardson led the Wildcats’ (1-0) offense with a pair of hits.

A.J. Rodgers had two hits to lead the Generals (0-1), while Brandon Fears and Zach Brinson each added a hit.

Lanier 17, Johns Creek 9

SUGAR HILL — Jake Ludwig and Jadyn Jackson led a big offensive outburst as Lanier routed Johns Creek 17-9 to open the 2019 season Monday at Lanier.

Ludwig finished the day 4-for-5 with a pair of doubles and four RBIs, while Jackson was 3-for-4, scored three runs and drove in another to help the Longhorns (1-0) to the victory.

Chase Coursey also contributed by going 2-for-3 with three runs and an RBI and Mikey Kass was also 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored.

Dylan Leahy (1-0) secured the win out of the bullpen by scattering three hits and fanning two in 1 1/3 shutout innings.


North Gwinnett 20, Kennesaw Mountain 10

KENNESAW — Parker Nevels, Macy Young and Caroline Ariano all scored multiple goals as North Gwinnett doubled up host Kennesaw Mountain 20-10 in the season opener Monday at KMHS.

Lana Puckett picked up the win in goal for the Bulldogs (1-0).


Duluth boys, girls sweep Berkmar

The Duluth boys and girls tennis teams both swept Berkmar 5-0 on Monday night. 

For the Duluth girls (1-1), Czarina Aguire swept 6-0, 6-0 on singles court No. 1. Akshara Jayaraman swept 6-0, 6-0 on court No. 2. Paige Graves won on singles No. 3 6-3, 6-2. On doubles, Sophia Leslie and Serenity Tolliver won 6-1, 6-2 on court No. 1, while Lexie Washburn and Harika Janadhyala won 6-0, 6-2.

The Duluth boys' (1-1) most contested win was on court No. 1 singles from Justin Eigen, 3-6, 6-2, 6-3. John Humphries won 6-0, 6-4 on court No. 2. Anthony Molinet won 6-1, 6-4 on No. 3. On doubles No. 1, Richard Dunn and Ethan Abraham won 6-3, 6-0. Eddie Holman and Jiwan Lee closed out No. 2 with a win 6-0, 6-3.
