Lanier begins this year with a high level of confidence, built up during a breakthrough 2018 season that featured a run to the state semifinals. A number of key players return from that team, including highly touted linebacker Phillip Webb, and an impressive offensive line, which will block for 1,000-yard rusher Taj Barnes and a new starting quarterback, Andrew Blackford.

Cole Beasley, Nick Claypole and Mason Ladd are the returning offensive line starters. They are joined by promising juniors Luke Jones and Price Campbell.

“I think the playoffs were huge for the offensive line to gain confidence,” Lanier head coach Korey Mobbs said. “In the type of games we played with the (rainy, cold) weather, we ran the ball. And that was successful for us and it was a confidence-builder for the offensive line.”

Peachtree Ridge aims for a much better season after struggling to 1-9 last year, which got off to a rough start with a 47-0 loss to Lanier.

Offensive line also figures to be a strength for the Lions. Nearly the entire offensive line returns, including rising seniors Matthew Adoghe and Josh Keomysay, plus rising juniors Alex Carman, Amari McNeill and Cameron Ellerby.

“We’ve got four of our five starters back, and (the other lineman) who will start for us this year (Keomysay) is coming back off (knee) surgery from the first game (of last year),” Peachtree Ridge head coach Reggie Stancil said. “Any time you have a good offensive and defensive line, I think you’re going to be successful on that side of the ball because everything starts at the line of scrimmage.”

That line hopes to pave the way to improvement for an offense that scored just 42 points in its first nine games last season (then scored 41 in a season-ending win over Discovery).
