Central Gwinnett has four returning starters and is looking to make some noise in its competitive Region 7-AAAAAAA.
“We're kind of young, but we've been playing together for two years now so they're ready to be aggressive and really go after this region,” head coach Emmett Rouse said. “It's going to be competitive every night.
“Any four teams that come out of this region are going to be competing for the state.”
Senior guard Kenneth Jackson II is the Black Knights' shooter.
“Great jump shot,” Rouse said. “Great form.”
Juniors Kazon Peters and DaQuan Hawkins also are back.
“(Peters) has a quick first step, gets to the basket aggressively,” Rouse said. (Hawkins) is my point guard, my leader, my captain — and he's the one that gets fussed at the most.”
Bringing some height to the lineup are sophomore forward Deavon Garnett and senior guard Skylar Adams, the school's star quarterback.
“Small, aggressive and up-tempo,” Rouse said of the team's style. “We're younger, but they've been playing together so they have chemistry. The main thing we're trying to preach is family.”
Hawkins likes the game plan.
“It fits us — a lot of teamwork and a lot of aggression,” he said.
The offseason training included a lot of work in the gym.
“We bonded in the weight room and improved our skills a lot,” Peters said.
Last year's results have served as a driving force for the returning foursome.
“A lot of it could be used as motivation,” Jackson said. “There were a lot of mistakes that we learned from through the offseason.
Central is again traveling for a tournament in Tallahassee after Thanksgiving.
“That was some good competition last year,” Rouse said. “This year we're playing a team that won state the last three years in a row. We want to play good competition.
“We have another one in Alabama, the Hoover Classic. There were 17 coaches (in the stands) the first night we played there. We also play Dacula and Mountain View before the region starts.”
