Alcovy Tigers (3-AAAAAA)
Coach: Jason Dukes
Last week: Lost to Newton 27-0
Duluth Wildcats (7-AAAAAAA)
Coach: Cam Jones
Last week: Had a bye
Duluth lost its planned season opener against Chattahoochee because Fulton County schools delayed the start of their seasons amid the COVID-19 pandemic. That was followed up by a bye last week, so the Wildcats finally get their 2020 season underway Friday with a home game against Alcovy.
It figures to be a good chance for early-season momentum against the Tigers, who have played two games — though both were lopsided losses. They fell 35-3 to North Forsyth in the opener, and 27-0 to Newton last week. Alcovy, from Newton County, hasn’t had a winning season since 2013.
It has been an even longer drought for Duluth, whose last winning season was 1995. The Wildcats look to take a step forward in Jones’ second season as head coach.
An offense full of talented returning players is a promising sign. Quarterback Lonnie Ratliff is back after accounting for more than 2,700 yards (2,396 passing) last year as a sophomore. Jaiden Jones (57-888-6 TDs) joins him among the returning players along with three offensive line starters back from 2019.
The defense also looks to improve with returning talent and a new coordinator, Justin Lormand.
When: Friday, 7:30 p.m.
Last meeting: Alcovy won 37-22 in 2017
Location: Duluth High School
