Shiloh knocks off Parkview 3-0 in state volleyball tournament

LILBURN -- Shiloh came into Parkview on Thursday and showed a lot of the same drive it displayed in the area tournament against Rockdale in the loser's bracket final.

That time, Shiloh fell 2-1. This time, the Generals came out on top.

Gloria Watson led the way with 11 kills, an ace, 2 blocks and 9 digs for third-seeded Shiloh in a 25-19, 27-25, 28-26 win over second-seeded Parkview.

"It was fabulous," Shiloh coach Traci Head said. "The girls did a phenomenal job of staying with it and not giving up. It's great to see them rewarded for such a hard year."

Parkview (17-22) came out of the gate and led the first game 4-1. The teams began to trade a lot of service errors, something that happened on both sides all night, and fought evenly for a while. Shiloh (15-13) began to make a run when it hit 10 points, rattling off five in a row. Then after coming back to tie the game at 15-15, the Generals continued a run of nine straight points to a 23-15 lead. Parkview came back to hit 19 points, but Shiloh finished the game off 25-19.

The second game started much the same. Brianna Campbell recorded a kill on the first point to put Shiloh up, but then Parkview's Riley Weyher (three kills, two assists, eight digs) returned the favor. Shiloh built up a 10-6 lead, but Parkview came back to lead 14-11.

The Panthers were on the brink of tying the match up with a 24-21 lead. That's when Shiloh rolled off six of the next seven points, including three kills by Watson and two aces by Campbell, to win a tight contest 27-25 and go up 2-0.

"I'm very excited," Watson said. "I'm glad my team came together. ... I have to remember to slow myself down at the pace of the game. So usually if I slow down and readjust, I can get it going."

After a break, Parkview came out looking sharp with its back against the wall, scoring the first four points in the third game. Rachel Rust recorded an ace and a kill on the way to a 4-0 lead.

The Panthers led most of the way in Game 3 until Shiloh made a late run to go up 20-18. The Generals hit match point at 24-21, but Parkview didn't go without a fight. Rust knocked down three kills in a row to help her team rally to a 25-25 tie.

But up 27-26, Shiloh's Brianna Stith sent a ball over the net and to the floor, clinching a 28-26 win in the game and a trip to the next round of the state tournament.

Parkview coach Catherine Zidow said the Panthers may have suffered from nerves in what she called a "heartbreaking" loss.

"I think we were just unable to capitalize on things that we do well tonight," Zidow said. "We didn't really hit the ball well. We struggled in service and receive a little bit."

Campbell had two aces, eight kills, two blocks and three digs, Jackie Harris had a kill, 23 assists, 2 digs, and Erika Lewis had eight digs for the Generals.

Parkview's other leaders were Justice Davis with 16 digs, Alli Taylor with seven digs, Taylor Steward with five digs, and Meredith Pounds with a kill, and assist and a dig.

Shiloh will play the winner of the matchup between Area 4 No. 1 Walton and Area 3 No. 4 Kennesaw Mountain.
