Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands broke the 23-year-old record women's mile world record with a time of four minutes and 12.33 seconds at a meet in Monaco.
Russia's Svetlana Masterkova set the previous record of 4:12.56 in Zurich in 1996.
"When I crossed the line I was so surprised," Hassan said following the race Friday at the Diamond League's Herculis Meeting. "I knew I could run fast, but the first 800 was a bit slow, so after that I wasn't thinking it would be a world record."
Hassan, 26, who was born in Ethiopia, won the world indoor championship in the 1,500-meter run in 2016 in Portland.
