Christian "Chritobin" Lomenzo and Reginald "Boogz" Brown each went 2-1 and won their groups on Friday, claiming a first-round bye and moving into the quarterfinals of the Madden NFL 19 Challenge in Redwood City, Calif.
Both players lost their first game -- Chritobin fell 13-7 to Matt "BeastModeMac" Clark, while Boogz fell 30-17 to Jordan "Canes" Powell -- but rebounded with two victories to close round-robin play. Chritobin beat Josiah "Siah" Jackson 38-13 and Pavan "Pavan" Lakhat 19-7, clinching Group A with the head-to-head tiebreaker over Siah.
Boogz crushed Michael "Spoto" Spoto 31-7 and beat Jelani "Jsthebest" Shelton 29-16, taking Group B on a head-to-head tiebreaker over Spoto.
Chritobin will face Spoto in the quarterfinals on Sunday, after the Group B runner-up dispatched Group A third-place finisher Pavan 20-10. Boogz will meet Jsthebest, who took down Siah 31-10 in Friday's other Round of 16 battle. The winners of those Sunday quarterfinals will meet in the semifinals.
Group C and Group D get underway on Saturday with round-robin play and the other two Round of 16 matches.
The $190,000 tournament features 16 players in a battle for the $35,000 first prize and two of the 16 slots in the Madden Bowl, which will be held from April 25-27. Competitors who don't clinch one of those two spots by reaching the Madden Challenge finals could still qualify for the Madden Bowl by earning Madden Championship Series points.
