Buford volleyball players get ready for the finals match against Hebron Christian at the Gwinnett County Volleyball Championships last month at Parkview. The Wolves won two matches at home Saturday to advance to the quarterfinals of the Class AAAAA state tournament.

BUFORD — Buford played its first two rounds of the Class AAAAA state volleyball tournament Saturday, and came away with sweeps of both matches to advance to the Elite Eight on Saturday at home.

The Wolves (27-12) first cruised past North Springs 25-7, 25-12, 25-7, and then followed up with a 25-17, 25-10, 25-11 win over South Effingham.

The wins send Buford into the state quarterfinal round, where it will await the second-round winner between Kell and Fayette County next Saturday.

Hebron Christian beats Pinecrest Academy in straight sets

DACULA — Hayden McGee pounded down 10 kills and Rebeca Olariu added nine kills as Hebron Christian breezed to a 25-2, 25-6, 25-5 sweep of Pinecrest Academy in the first round of the Class A/AA (Private) state tournament Saturday at Hebron.

Malia Fisher also had six kills, while Abbi Luke had a strong day of setting with 21 assists and serving with 10 aces, as the Lions (41-7) advanced to a second-round match against Mount Vernon Presbyterian next week.

Wesleyan gets first-round sweep

ATLANTA — A strong day from Grace Carroll on offense, Riley Bryan setting and Meredith Mangum on defense helped push Wesleyan to a 25-5, 25-6, 25-17 sweep of St. Francis in a first-round match of the Class A/AA (Private) state tournament Saturday at Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School.

Carroll had 12 kills, while Bryan handed out 31 assists and Mangum added 18 digs as the Wolves (30-16) earned a berth in the second round against Holy Innocents’ next week.

Parkview downs Milton in first-round sweep

KENNESAW — Parkview took care of Milton 25-21, 26-24, 25-20 in there first-round Class AAAAAAA state tournament match Saturday at Kennesaw Mountain High School.

Margaret Schirm had a huge defensive day at the net with 18 digs, while Mia Mattison added eight blocks and Meg Youngblood led the back-row defense with 10 digs for the Panthers (30-15), who will return to Kennesaw Mountain for a second-round match with the host Mustangs at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Jordan Godfree had seven kills to lead the Parkview offense.

Mill Creek sweeps Shiloh in the first round

HOSCHTON — Mill Creek opened up their Class AAAAAAA state tournament in strong fashion with a 25-12, 25-11, 25-7 first-round sweep of Shiloh on Saturday at home.

The Hawks (40-7) advance to welcome Etowah to Mill Creek for a second-round match Tuesday night at 6.

GAC rolls to first-round sweep of Pike County

JEFFERSON — Greater Atlanta Christian needed just three sets to defeat Pike County in their first-round match of the Class AAA state tournament Saturday at Jefferson High School.

The Spartans (25-13) will next take on Jefferson in the second round.

Peachtree Ridge advances after sweep of Archer

COVINGTON — Peachtree Ridge got a big day from Niki Landry, who finished with 18 kills, a .441 hitting percentage and 21 digs, and downed Archer 25-14, 25-15, 25-17 in first-round Class AAAAAAA match Saturday at Newton High School.

Kelie Watkins also had seven kills and five blocks, Aaleayah Odom distributed 33 assists and added 19 digs and Kendal Murphy chipped in five aces and 18 digs for the Lions (23-15), who will meet Roswell in the second round later this week.

Providence Christian falls to Mt. Pisgah in four sets

SAVANNAH — Providence Christian took the first game of its first-round Class AA/A state volleyball match against Mt. Pisgah, but dropped an 11-25, 25-15, 25-21, 25-18 decision Saturday at Savannah Christian School.

Alaina Emminger had four aces and 19 kills, while Lauren Yost, added three aces and 17 assists for the Storm, whose season came to an end at 28-20.
