KENNESAW – Peachtree Ridge's softball team pulled off a huge upset as the at-large team in the Class AAAAAAA state playoffs, defeating Kennesaw Mountain 9-0 and 11-3 to win its opening series Wednesday.

Peachtree Ridge will travel to the winner of the Brookwood-South Forsyth series, which has its decisive Game 3 on Thursday.

Elle Lunsford was the winning pitcher in both games for the Lions. D'amani Gadson delivered a decisive grand slam in game one to propel the visitors to the win. Kennedy Harp added a pair of hits.

In the clinching victory, Harp added two hits and an RBI to her day's totals. Riley Hudson also had a hit and drove in a pair of runs. Lunsford tallied two hits and an RBI while Alex Harris delivered a hit, scored two runs and drove in two.


Mill Creek advances

LAWRENCEVILLE – Mill Creek scored a late run to defeat host Archer 2-1 and advance in the Class AAAAAAA playoffs on Wednesday. The Hawks (16-13) will travel to face East Coweta in the second round.

Mill Creek scored in the first but Archer tied the game at one in the fourth. In the top of the fifth, Olivia Shaw's suicide squeeze bunt scored Hannah Smith with what turned out to be the winning run. Sara Shaw was the winning pitcher, tossing a complete game, while Dallis Goodnight had a hit and scored the game's opening run.

North Gwinnett sweeps Shiloh

SUWANEE – North Gwinnett dispatched Shiloh 8-0 in five innings and 19-0 in three innings in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state tournament on Wednesday. The Bulldogs (27-1) will host Etowah in round two next week.

Amber Reed was the winning pitcher in the opener, going all five innings and striking out 11 Generals. Reed also helped herself with two hits, including a home run. Meaghan Lewis, Morgan Frye and Simone Leonard also had two hits in the win.

In the clincher, Jaylyn Benson picked up the win in the circle and did not allow a hit while striking a two-run home run at the plate. Grace Connelly blasted a three-run home run while Marisa Miller added two hits, scored twice and drove in five runs.

Brookwood splits

CUMMING – Brookwood forced a decisive Game 3 as the Broncos split with host South Forsyth in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state tournament on Wednesday.

The Broncos lost game one 11-2, but rallied for a 10-2 win in the nightcap to stave off elimination. Game 3 will be played Thursday at South Forsyth.

Jaryn Gibson provided the highlight in the opener as she connected on a two-run home run.

In Game 2, Grace Young was the winning pitcher and Danielle Taitt powered the offense with four hits. Gibson blasted another home run, Young helped her own cause with two hits and two RBIs while Olivia Jaime also had two hits and drove in two run for Brookwood (11-15).

Grayson sweeps Collins Hill

LOGANVILLE – Grayson defeated Collins Hill 8-0 and 9-0 in a pair of five inning games in the first round of the Class AAAAAAA state tournament on Wednesday.

Kylie Macy was the winning pitcher in both games for the Rams (25-5).

Sam Smith hit a two-run home run while Kailyn Jones added a solo shot to lead Grayson in game one. Aaliyah White had three hits while Emma Davis drove in a pair of runs.

In the clincher, Jones provided three hits and two RBIs while Macy added two hits and drove in two. White added to more hits to her totals and Skyler Gilbert drove in three runs. The Rams will face the winner of Thursday's Game 3 between Lassiter and Newnan.

Greater Atlanta Christian falls

ATLANTA – Greater Atlanta Christian lost to Lovett 10-1 and 6-4 in nine innings on Wednesday in the Class AAA state tournament.

Faith Vento had three strikeouts for the Spartans while Sydney Deardorff was 2-for-2 in Game 1.

Charliee Cutchins had two hits, Rachel Peligreni added a hit and an RBI while Vento also drove in a run in the second game. Deardorff and Caroline Marschalk also drove in runs for the Spartans.

Hebron sweeps Whitfield Academy

DACULA – Hebron Christian pummeled Whitfield Academy 12-0 and 13-0 in the first round of the Class A private state softball tournament on Wednesday. The Lions (17-10) advance to face Mount Vernon in round two.


Brookwood captures Region crown

NORCROSS – Brookwood defeated Norcross 16-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 to win the Region 7-AAAAAAA title on Wednesday.

Abbey Tucker led the Broncos (29-16) with 35 assists. Sophia Koop registered 14 kills and 10 digs, Ellie Rey contributed 25 digs, Zoie Foston had 11 digs and Cydney Gardner contributed 19 kills and 18 digs.

Bella Murray led the Blue Devils (37-7) with 33 assists, 11 kills and 16 digs. Janna Schlageter recorded 16 kills while Reesa Schroeder added 16 digs.

Parkview takes third

NORCROSS – Parkview needed five sets, but it prevailed in the third place match of the Region 7-AAAAAAA tournament on Wednesday.

The Panthers (29-15) move on to the state tournament after defeating Lakeside-DeKalb 25-20, 18-25, 25-14, 19-25 and 15-7. Margaret Schirm led Parkview with 12 blocks while Abby Schirm recorded nine kills.
