BUFORD — Freshman Mackenzie Pickens’ huge game fueled the Buford softball team’s 10-2 win over visiting Walnut Grove on Monday.

Pickens went 3-for-4 with two home runs and five RBIs, ending the game with a two-run homer in the fifth inning that invoked the mercy rule. She also had a two-run home run in the fourth.

Tavye Borders, another freshman, went for 3-for-3 with an RBI triple for the Wolves (16-2). Freshman pitcher Emma Grace Williams (8-0) earned the victory in a five-inning complete game. She took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a two-run homer.

Buford also got offensive contributions from Shamya Young (2-for-3, one run, two stolen bases) and Taylor Malvin (2-for-4, RBI, two runs, two stolen bases).

SOFTBALL

Mountain View 7, Mill Creek 2

HOSCHTON — Mountain View and Claire Schneider delivered the knockout blow in a six-run first inning Monday.

Schneider’s bases loaded triple, one of her two hits, was the biggest hit of the decisive first inning. Kellie Ervin had two singles, scored a run and had an RBI for the Bears (16-3, 5-0 Region 8-AAAAAAA). Sarah Currie (11-1) had a single and pitched a complete game, striking out eight, walking three and allowing eight hits.

Olivia Shaw had a home run and an RBI single to drive in both Mill Creek runs. Madison Dobbins had two doubles, and Alora Bevily had two singles for the Hawks, while Ari Cole had a double and Cameron Wade added a single.

Grayson 9, Wesleyan 0

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Kylie Macy pitched a no-hitter with nine strikeouts Monday, and visiting Grayson defeated Wesleyan 9-0.

Kailyn Jones, Nia McKnight and Jordyn Green each had two hits for the Rams (14-2), while Lauryn Peppers added an RBI double.

Norcross 10, Pace Academy 2

ATLANTA — Lea Smith went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs Monday, leading Norcross to a 10-2 win at Pace Academy.

Kedzie Howe was 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI, in addition to being the winning pitcher. She struck out three and allowed seven hits in a complete game.

Molly Hamrick (2-for-4, RBI), Sara Tracey (2-for-4, RBI) and Cate Sidey (2-for-4, RBI) also stood out for the Blue Devils.

Archer 7, Winder-Barrow 1

WINDER — Archer rolled to a 7-1 win at Winder-Barrow on Monday.

Kailyn James pitched all seven innings and allowed one unearned run with three hits. She struck out seven. She also went 2-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate.

K.K. Walls (2-for-3), Faith Barth (2-for-4, RBI) and Abby Parkerson (2-for-3, two RBIs) also stood out for the Tigers.

Discovery 19, Meadowcreek 4

NORCROSS — Heidi Loa was 4-for-4 with a double, an RBI and three runs Monday in Discovery’s 19-4 win over Meadowcreek.

The Titans also got big offensive games from Yoali Sanchez (2-for-2, two RBIs), Dakota Vaughn (2-for-3, triple, RBI, two runs) and Joyce Lieu (1-for-2, two RBIs, two runs).

Andy Ruelas pitched a complete game and struck out five to earn the win.

Lanier 13, Providence 0

SUGAR HILL — Lauren Cothern, Payton Franklin, Sam Fadely and Kelsi Renuart drove in three runs each Monday in Lanier’s 13-0 victory over Providence Christian.

Cothern was 3-for-3 with a double, Franklin went 2-for-2, Fadely was 1-for-2 and Renuart was 1-for-2.

Cothern also pitched two hitless innings and struck out four. Carly Forrester also pitched two hitless innings with four strikeouts and a walk.

VOLLEYBALL

GAC tops Alpharetta

ALPHARETTA — Greater Atlanta Christian traveled to Alpharetta on Monday and posted a five-set victory over the powerful hosts.

The Spartans won the battle 28-26, 22-25, 25-19, 13-25, 15-12.

Hebron rolls

ATLANTA — Hebron Christian improved to 3-0 in region play with a 25-18, 25-14 win over Atlanta International School on Monday.

The Lions (26-2) were led by Carly Heidger (nine kills, four blocks), Malia Fisher (eight kills, two blocks), Hoake Mazzawi (six digs), Angelia Bonner (16 assists) and Morgan Smith (six assists).
