PREP ROUNDUP: Balk boosts Parkview past Buford

LILBURN — A balk in the bottom of the sixth brought home the go-ahead run and Parkview held on for a 4-3 win over Buford on Thursday.

Quinton Cochran was awarded home plate as a result of the balk call, making a winner of Graham Yntema, who came on in relief for starter Miles Garrett.

Garrett went 4 1/3 innings and struck out five. Cameron Orr picked up the save by retiring Buford in the top of the seventh.

Stephen Hrustich connected on a three-run home run for the Panthers (18-2). Allan De Castillo and Jonathan French each had two hits in the non-region matchup.

BASEBALL

Collins Hill 11,

Lakeside-DeKalb 1 (5 inn.)

SUWANEE — Collins Hill downed visiting Lakeside-DeKalb 11-1 in a five-inning non-region game on Thursday. Sam Horn threw three innings to earn the win for the Eagles (10-7). Greg Lake led the offense with three hits and three RBIs while Josh Merritt recorded two hits.

Providence 6,

Riverside Military 2

LILBURN — Providence Christian’s Zach Douglas connected on a two-run home run to lead the Storm to a 6-2 win over Riverside Military on Thursday.

Ben Johnson was the winning pitcher, tossing six innings and allowing two runs on four hits and striking out 11. Simon Graf retired all three batters he faced in the seventh via strikeout. Pierce Phillips had two hits and stole a base while Cole Edwards had two hits and an RBI for Providence Christian (4-16, 3-2).

Hebron 11,

Athens Christian 0 (5 inn.)

ATHENS — Hebron Christian shut out Athens Christian 11-0 on Thursday in a non-region game. Mason Ashley had three hits and drove in four runs to lead the Lions (8-8). Anthony Lentine collected two hits and two RBIs and Max Bennett added two hits to power the offense. Zach Kwiatkowski went all five innings and allowed three hits to earn the win on the mound.

Wesleyan 21, ELCA 11, 5 innings

PEACHTREE CORNERS — A huge night by freshman Druw Jones helped Wesleyan outslug Eagle’s Landing Christian 21-11 in a Region 5-A contest Thursday at Donn Gaebelein Field.

Jones, the son of former Atlanta Braves All-Star Andruw Jones, finished the night 3-for-5 with 11 RBIs, including grand slams in consecutive innings, the second of which allowed the Wolves (12-4, 6-0) to walk off with the win on the GHSA’s run rule in the bottom of the fifth.

Joe Chatham also had a big day at the plate by going 2-for-3, including a three-run home run as Wesleyan scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first, then answered with Jones’ outburst after ELCA rallied back within two runs by the top of the fourth.

AIR RIFLE

North advances to semis

SUWANEE — North Gwinnett defeated Benedictine Military 1149-1071 to advance to the semifinal round of the state air rifle tournament. Andrea Contis tied the school record by firing a 293. Matthew Herrington recorded a 288, Shasta Robinson had a 287 and Corina Fluker ended with a 281.

The Bulldogs will face Northside from Columbus in the semifinal round.

GIRLS SOCCER

Discovery 3, Collins Hill 2

LAWRENCEVILLE — Discovery defeated Collins Hill 3-2 to earn its first ever win in Region 6-AAAAAAA on Thursday. Theanna Burnett, Kim Guckert and Kim Altamirano all scored for the Titans.

Mountain View 3, Duluth 1

DULUTH — Mountain View defeated Duluth 3-1 on Thursday in a Region 6-AAAAAAA match. Sam Romaine, Kennedy Jackson and Sydney Woods scored goals for the Bears (7-6-1, 3-2).

Buford 10, Cedar Shoals 0

BUFORD — Buford blanked Cedar Shoals 10-0 on Thursday. Ava Sherman scored three times to lead the Wolves. Arden Paulino scored twice while Buford also received goals from Sydney Borgelt, Chloe Kerr, Madison Johnson, Emma Danley and Maggie Leland. Kayla Kim recorded the shutout in net for Buford (9-3-3, 5-0).

Wesleyan 6, Hebron 1

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Wesleyan raced past Hebron Christian 6-1 on Thursday. Lucy Mitchell scored twice to lead the Wolves (6-3-1, 4-0). Ashley Cowart, Izzy Moratti, Kaitlyn Bobo and Emily Becker also scored in the win.

GAC 1, Blessed Trinity 1

NORCROSS — Greater Atlanta Christian and Blessed Trinity played to a 1-1 draw on Thursday. Micah Bryant scored for the Spartans (8-5-1).

Providence 1, Walker 0

MARIETTA — Providence Christian defeated Walker 1-0 on Thursday. Heidi Whitten scored off a corner kick from Cate Lee for the Storm (8-3, 1-2). Leila Moss made 14 saves in net to record the shutout.

Brookwood 2, Berkmar 1

SNELLVILLE — Brookwood picked up its first Region 7-AAAAAAA win of the season as the Broncos defeated Berkmar 2-1 on Thursday. Michael Hopf and Nick Guzman scored goals for the Broncos (4-7)

GAC 2, Blessed Trinity 0

NORCROSS — Greater Atlanta Christian shut out Blessed Trinity 2-0 on Thursday. Damola Salami and Spencer Yates scored goals for the Spartans (11-3).

Wesleyan 7, Hebron 0

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Wesleyan defeated Hebron Christian 7-0 as Jonathan Lopez scored three goals for the Wolves on Thursday (7-4). Harrison Larner scored twice while Alex Cardile and Drew Shaffer also netted goals in the win.

Walker 2, Providence 1

MARIETTA — Providence Christian let a late lead slip away as the Storm fell to Walker 2-1 on Thursday. Sam Burnette scored in the first half to put Providence (4-7) ahead. The lead held until the game’s final 12 minutes when Walker scored both its goals.

JOHNS CREEK — Prince Avenue defeated Wesleyan 257-162 in a match played at St. Ives Country Club on Thursday. Will Scakel led the Wolves by firing a 37 and Michael Mele had a 39.

JOHNS CREEK — Wesleyan defeated Prince Avenue 84-100 in a match played at St. Ives County Club on Thursday. Jada Richardson led the Wolves with a 38 while Connor Carroll carded a 46.

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Wesleyan blanked George Walton Academy 5-0 on Thursday. David Anderson and Michael Peel along with Sam Lambert and Harrison Leach won in doubles. Dakota Early, Luke Schiller and Jack Jones were winners in singles for the Wolves (7-2).

PEACHTREE CORNERS — George Walton Academy squeaked by Wesleyan 3-2 on Thursday. Haden Jones and Grace Tyler won in doubles as did Bella Tucker in singles for the Wolves (6-3).

SUWANEE — Collins Hill defeated Lanier 21-2 on Thursday as Strickland Palmer scored seven goals. Tanner Wilson found the back of the net six times while Alex Cao and Tucker Bailey each scored twice for the Eagles (9-4).

Grayslake Central (Ill.) 3

BUFORD — Buford defeated Grayslake Central (Ill.) 9-3 on Thursday. Danny Reymond led the Wolves (10-3) with four goals and three assists. Max Whalen also netted a pair of goals.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Archer 11, Grayson 10 (OT)

LAWRENCEVILLE — Archer clinched the 6A-7A Area 8 title with a 11-10 overtime win over Grayson on Thursday. Emily Flynt scored the winner in overtime, one of her three goals in the game.

Carmen Corley, Sarah Spivey, Amber Washkill and Mikaela Carlson each scored two goals for the Tigers.

Mountain View 20,

Meadowcreek 2

LAWRENCEVILLE — Mountain View defeated Meadowcreek 20-2 on Thursday. Shelby Glasgow scored twice while Jazlyn Nieves and Emily Denaga also scored for the Bears (10-2, 5-1).

Wesleyan 19, GAC 4

PEACHTREE CORNERS — Wesleyan defeated Greater Atlanta Christian 19-4 on Thursday. Whitaker Welch led the Wolves (5-4) with eight goals. Chloe Hangartner scored five goals, Tabi Conrad recorded seven draw controls and goalie Gracie Brown made four saves.
