With eight players from Gwinnett County high schools on its roster, the United Futbol Academy 16U girls soccer team won the U.S. Club Soccer National Cup XVIII Championship.
The National Cup took place in Commerce City, Colo., and the championship game was played last Tuesday after five days of action. One of the most prestigious soccer tournaments in the country, there were more than 5,000 players from 250 teams across 30 states.
Three players from Wesleyan — Caroline Archer, Ashley Binney and Marisa Lambert — helped UFA to the win. Discovery's Theanna Burnett, South Gwinnett's Samantha De La Cruz, Norcross' Hayley Foster, Peachtree Ridge's Daniela Henriquez Rojas and Grayson's Jocelyn Hill make for a significant county contingent. Liliana Johnson, who attends Veritas Classical School, is a Suwanee resident.
United Futbol Academy was undefeated in tournament play, scoring a total of 13 goals. The team defeated Hawaii Rush Maui in the tournament finale 3-1.
In their first game on Friday, UFA defeated Salvo SC Orange 3-2. They followed up that victory with another win Saturday, defeating PDA Surf 1-0. On Sunday, UFA had another shutout, this time dominating Challenge Red to the tune of 6-0. An off day Monday was followed by their victory over Hawaii Rush on Tuesday.
National Cup XVII is the pinnacle event of a club-based competition among nationwide qualifiers. UFA competed in the Girls Premier Group.
