GRAYSON — The Archer wrestling team finished in second place in the Region 8 AAAAAAA championships hosted at Grayson High School.
Rockdale won the tournament, highlighted by an impressive run of winning seven of the 10 heaviest 10 weight class finals.
Wade Hipp (106), Vernon Rogers (113), Cameron Sapp (120) and Nathan Pratt (145) won the finals in their weight classes for Archer.
Out of 14 weight classes, 11 of Archer’s wrestlers are ninth-or 10th-graders. Archer and Rockdale won 11 of the 14 finals.
“We got everybody that we brought to push through except for one,” Archer head coach Keith Jannett said. “And he’ll be the alternate, so if something happens, he’ll be right back in there and be able to compete. The idea is that you get everybody through to the next round, whether that’s a first place or a fourth place. That’s because everybody starts back 0-0 next week at sectionals.”
Archer entered the finals as the leader, but Rockdale eventually took over the lead and Archer couldn’t recapture it.
After not winning any finals before the 132-pound weight class, Rockdale’s heavier wrestlers pushed it over the top. When it won matches at 132 and 138, Rockdale began to widen the gap between itself and Archer.
South Gwinnett’s Trevon Guthrie (126), Grayson’s Davon Mayfield (160) and Newton’s Micah Bryant (220) won the remaining weight classes.
