Former Berkmar runner Girma Mecheso and former Collins Hill coach Andrew Hudson will be inducted into the Georgia Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Hall of Fame this weekend.
Mecheso and Hudson are part of eight athletes and two coaches who will be recognized during the organization’s annual coaches clinic.
Mecheso, who was born in Ethiopia and lived in Kenya for nine years, won the 2006 state cross country championship with a time of 15 minutes, 1 second on Carrollton’s hilly course, finishing 43 seconds ahead of the event’s defending champion. He was ninth in the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships that year to earn All-American honors.
Mecheso ran in college for Auburn and Oklahoma State, earning 10 All-American honors and winning cross country conference titles in both the SEC (2008) and Big 12 (2010).
Hudson spent 24 of his 30 seasons of coaching high school cross country and track and field at Collins Hill (he also has coached at Riverside Military and Denmark). He has won 11 team state titles in cross country and track and field, as well as more than 30 region titles. He also has coached eight individual state champions in cross country and more than 40 individual state champions in track and field.
