NORCROSS — Both Meadowcreek and Brookwood entered Thursday night without a region loss. Only Brookwood can still claim that now.
The Broncos started early and were spurred by a balanced rushing en route to a 47-19 win over host Meadowcreek.
“I’m proud of our victory," Brookwood head coach Philip Jones said. "I was a little worried about being out of rhythm because of the weird schedule. Huge credit to our kids. They were very sharp.”
Playing on a Thursday instead of Friday, the Broncos wasted no time marching down on the opening drive in four plays. Quarterback Jack Spyke scored on a nine-yard touchdown run off of a zone-read. Meadowcreek opened the game with consecutive punts and Brookwood took advantage.
Playing a two-quarterback system, the Broncos inserted freshman quarterback Dylan Lonergan and watched the first-year player lead a two-play drive, culminating in a 57-yard touchdown pass to T.J. Burdian, who was left wide opening the middle of the field. Jones was satisfied with the play of his quarterbacks on the night.
“Dylan had a big night, made good decisions with the football, Jack did well," Jones said. "He executed the two-minute drill before the half, which was big for our confidence going into the second half.”
Meadowcreek (3-4, 2-1 region) gained traction on its next possession as the Mustangs embarked on a 17-play drive that included a fourth-down conversion. But it ended after another fourth-down attempt stalled at the Bronco 35-yard line.
Following the turnover on downs, the Lonergan-Burdian connection struck again as Lonergan hit the senior receiver on a slant and watched him jog into the end zone for a 20-0 advantage. Eli Kohl gained 101 rushing yards on the ground in the first half and scored on a seven-yard run in the final minute of the opening half. Rock Gaither notched the only score of the half for Meadowcreek on a five-yard TD run.
Brookwood (3-3, 2-0) continued its dominance in the third quarter as it opened with rushing TDs by Lonergan and Kohl on its first two possessions of the second half.
The Broncos controlled the game with a great rushing attack, tallying 305 rushing yards on the night. Kohl led all rushers with 137 rushing yards on 11 carries and two scores.
“Running the ball tonight it was all the (offensive) line. They played great tonight,” Kohl said.
Lonergan completed all three of his passes for 92 yards and two scores while Burdian led the receivers with 83 receiving yards on two catches and two scores. For Meadowcreek, it was never able to get its offense in gear, scoring its first points after it trailed by 20.
Gaither led the rushing attack with 95 yards and a score while quarterback Quincy Bonner threw for 147 yards and one TD. He also caught a TD pass off of a pass from receiver Jabari Ponder.
