ROME — Carlton Bryant’s memories of last year’s Class AAAAAAA state meet weren’t the best, but he made up for it Friday at Berry College.

The Peachtree Ridge junior won the state championship in the high jump at 6 feet, 6 inches, a height no other jumper cleared. It made up for a sophomore season that ended with a disappointing jump at state of 6-0, when his personal record was 6-4.

“It meant so much because last year I placed 16th, which was last place, and this year I got on top,” Bryant said. “It felt amazing.”

Teammate Quailyn Leake also scored in the high jump, finishing in a four-way tie for seventh at 6-2.
