BLUE RIDGE — The Fannin County Rebels offered little opposition to a prolific Buford offense.
The top-ranked Wolves (8-0, 5-0) looked stellar on the road, scoring touchdowns on their first six possessions. The matchup offered a great chance for head coach Jess Simpson to showcase the depth that has carried the program to great success.
“We have some injuries this year and this was a game where we were able to get some other guys in the game,” Simpson said. “We have some players that needed a little rest but hopefully will be ready to go for us soon.”
Isaac Nauta opened the scoring with a 37-yard catch-and-run down the Buford sideline from quarterback Taylor Mitchell to give the Wolves an early 7-0 lead.
Xavier Gantt got his evening started, darting through the line en route to a 63-yard rushing score with 3:05 remaining in the first quarter.
Sophomore running back Martin Mangram found the end zone on a 23-yard scamper early in the second quarter and gave the Wolves a 21-0 lead.
Gantt went 32 yards for his second touchdown of the evening to extend the Wolves’ lead to 28 with 9:27 left in the quarter.
Quarterback Montgomery VanGorder found Tre Neal on a 13-yard screen and the Wolves led comfortably at the break 35-0.
In the third quarter, Mangram scored for the second time from 34 yards out to make the score 42-0.
One bright spot for Fannin County (2-6, 1-4) was a 68-yard passing touchdown from quarterback Trevor Stone to wide receiver Jerod Petty, who made a nice cut down the middle of the field for the score.
Matt Bonadies extended his previous streak of 45 straight PAT’s to 51 and added a 35-yard field goal with 5:37 left in the fourth to cap the scoring.
Buford registered three quarterback sacks on the evening while Shaq Frazier led the defense with four tackles.
”We have to keep going one day and one week at a time,” Simpson said. “The best teams keep improving and we want to be that team.”
