Prep soccer: Gwinnett team previews

Region 8-AAAAAA

Coach: Jamie Wellington

2012 record: 2-11-1

Returning starters: DEF Michael Frye, Jr.; MF Anthony Keiss, Soph.; MF Jacob Moore, Jr.; MF Michael Ward, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Grant Carr, Fr.; F Thomas Long, Jr.; DEF Kevin Quiterio, Jr.

Outlook: The Tigers hope an influx of young talent can boost a lineup with four returning starters. Archer lost some close matches last season in a tough region.

Coach: Tracy Crouch

2012 record: 5-12

Returning starters: DEF Mauro Soza, Sr.; DEF Alex Ramos, Sr.; DEF Aaron Aguirre, Sr.; MF Jonathan Dowis, Sr.; MF Juan Sierra, Sr.; F Alexis Montanez, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Gabrielle Guerra, Soph.; MF Kofi Twumasi, Soph.; MF Juan Duenas, Sr.; DEF Rishi Brahmbat, Jr.; DEF David Koloko, Jr.; GK Juan Carlos Lopez, Jr.

Outlook: Close losses in region play made the Patriots' record last season look less than impressive, but they're eager to turn those tight games into victories this season. Six starters return to pursue that goal, including Montanez, a hard-working forward, and a trio of defenders.

Coach: Danny Klinect

2012 record/playoff finish: 17-3, state semifinals

Returning starters: MF Brahan Gamarra, Jr.; DEF Bryson Dorsey, Sr.; DEF Marijo Gojic, Sr.; DEF Cameron Grassmyer, Sr.; DEF Alan Barikos, Sr.; MF Ebun Terry, Sr.; MF Brandon Morrow, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Benaiah Shaw, Sr.; DEF Alfredo Rivera, Jr.; GK Andy Harris, Fr.; F Samaan Williams, Fr.

Outlook: Last season ended with a 1-0, Final Four loss to eventual state champion Collins Hill, and the Broncos have enough talent back for another deep playoff run. The defense will be stout again with Dorsey, Grassmyer, Gojic and Barikos back for another season. Gamarra, Morrow and Terry lead a strong returning group in the midfield.

Central Gwinnett

Coach: Bryan Allen

2012 record/playoff finish: 11-7-1, first round of playoffs

Returning starters: F Rigo Gudiel, Sr.; F Juan Gonzales, Jr.; MF Brayan Castillo, Jr.; MF Isaac Ramirez, Sr.; DEF Samir Ramic, Sr.; MF Raul Rabago, Sr.; DEF Sebastian Botello, Sr.; DEF Willie Ortiz, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Feseye Beyene, Sr.; GK Ricky Ortiz, Soph.; DEF Ensar Graskovic, Jr.; MF Brayan Herrera, Jr.; DEF Erick Morales, Sr.; MF Kevin Perez, Sr.; MF Nate Teklegiorgis, Jr.; DEF Azem Cavcic, Sr.

Outlook: Central graduated a pair of key leaders, both four-year starters, so that role falls to Ramic, another four-year starter and current team captain. He heads up a team with high hopes thanks to eight returning starters from a squad that made the playoffs last spring.

Coach: Mark Karen

2012 record: 9-9

Returning starters: F Joe Efford, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Marco Cando, Jr.; MF Tyler Moore, Sr.; MF Hunter Haynes, Soph.; MF Javion Joseph, Sr.; MF Dexter Reid, Jr.; F Giovanni Rodriguez, Soph.; MF James Omoerah, Jr.; MF Brian Mejia, Soph.; DEF Lonnie Cottrell, Jr.; DEF Nick Mattiucci, Jr.; GK Bryce Lackey, Fr.; MF Steven Agudelo, Jr.

Outlook: Karen, in his first season with the Falcons, likes the hard-working nature of this team, which is in rebuilding mode with only one true returning starter in Efford. The roster is young and undersized, so the coach is hopeful his team's work ethic will pay off in a difficult region.

Coach: Michael Ebel

2012 record: 9-8-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: MF Mitchell Parker, Sr.; MF Ryan Sanders, Jr.; MF Arijan Jaganjac, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Danny Kierath, Soph.; GK Jonathan Griffin, Jr.

Outlook: Duplicating a state playoff trip will require some work because of a completely revamped lineup. But the Rams do have some notable strengths, particularly in the midfield, where Parker is a four-year starter and Jaganjac is a returning all-county player.

Coach: Michael Tolmich

2012 record/playoff finish: 16-4-1, state semifinals

Returning starters: MF Abel Nguyen, Sr.; MF Sammy Korgi, Sr.; MF Nick Minar, Jr.; DEF Tyler Stephenson, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: GK J.B. Rumbaugh, Sr.; GK Chase Kammer, Sr.; DEF Cole Brown, Soph.

Outlook: After reaching the state semifinals last season, the Panthers return with a lineup that will feature some young faces. But they do have strong senior leadership and a strong midfield force in Nguyen, an Emory signee.

Coach: Bill Nollner

2012 record: 4-13

Returning starters: F Zach Pruitt, Sr.; F Christhian Andino, Sr.; MF Marcial Rodriguez, Sr.; MF Abdul Massa, Sr.; DEF Gabriel Navarro, Sr.; MF Adrian Lollar, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Bryan Gonzalez, Soph.; MF Carlos Echeverria, Jr.

Outlook: Leading scorer Pruitt gives hope for a big season, as does the return of Lollar, a playmaking midfielder. A veteran group of returning starters, including five seniors, is another reason for optimism.

South Gwinnett

Coach: Chris Calvin

2012 record: 11-6

Returning starters: DEF Chris Keller, Sr.; MF Sekou Thornell, Sr.; F Amar Salihic, Sr.; F John Pecos, Sr.; DEF/MF Derek Denton, Sr.; MF Jorge Cuenca, Sr.; DEF Austin Varney, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: GK Max Catamaglia, Jr.; DEF Jamar Gidden, Jr.; DEF Predro Rengifo, Jr.; MF Malik Thornell, Soph.; MF Dionysis Harmon, Fr.; DEF Juan Sevilla, Sr.

Outlook: Graduation losses, particularly at key positions, have put the Comets in rebuilding mode this season. Keller, a four-year letterman, and Denton, a three-year letterman, anchor a veteran defense. The offense has potential, too, with Sekou Thornell, Salihic and Pecos leading the way.

Region 7-AAAAAA

Collins Hill

Coach: Mike Burrell

2012 record/playoff finish: 18-4, state champions

Returning starters: GK Jackson Taylor, Sr.; DEF Freddie Maier, Sr.; MF Martin Sedarri, Jr.; MF Eli Carrasco, Sr.; MF Jordan Brust, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Jonathan Thomas, Jr.; DEF Allen Maslo, Jr.; DEF Sean Pack, Sr.; MF Andrew Olortegui, Sr.; MF Juan Restrepo, Soph.; MF Zach Lane, Sr.; MF Juan Romero, Sr.; MF Juan Ruiz, Sr.; MF Michael Craven, Jr.; MF Nick Crowther, Jr.; F Hunter Boyle, Sr.; F Matt Whelan, Sr.; F Paul Ille, Jr.

Outlook: Burrell, previously the head coach at Dacula, inherits a program that has played in the last five state championship games in Georgia's highest classification and has won three titles in that span with two different head coaches. Burrell is the third in that short time, and he's hoping for more success after last season's state championship. The Eagles were hurt more than most by defections to Academy soccer, but they have plenty of talent in a program gearing for another playoff push.

Coach: Gregg Tavani

2012 record: 8-6-3

Returning starters: DEF Eddie Patricio, Sr.; F/DEF/MF Daye Jack, Sr.; MF Marvin Gomez, Sr.; MF/DEF Edgar Camarena, Jr.; F Nikolai Iotov, Jr.; MF Carlos Delarosa, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Abel Sisay, Sr.; MF Jose Oliveros, Jr.; DEF/MF Eri Velazquez, Jr.; DEF/MF Felipe Arroyo, Jr.; MF/DEF Edel Ramos, Soph.

Outlook: The Wildcats have been a playoff contender in recent seasons, and nothing should change this spring. They sport a talented, veteran lineup with six returning starters.

Coach: Oscar Narvaez

2012 record: 8-6

Returning starters: GK Peter Gutierrez, Sr.; MF Jesus Bonilla, Sr.; MF Angel Vega, Jr.; DEF Rodrigo Reyes, Sr.; DEF Collins Udekigbo, Sr.; F Jairo Velazquez, Soph.; DEF Edgar Diaz, Jr.; F Christopher Morgan, Jr.; MF Brian Noble, Jr.; F Darrell Walters, Sr.; F Manuel Almendarez, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Yonnathan Manmektew, Sr.; MF Juan Amador, Soph.

Outlook: The Mustangs figure to contend for a playoff spot, even in difficult 7-AAAAAA. They return 11 players with starting experience, including a stout defense and a creative midfield. A strong core of goal-scorers also fuel what should be a potent attack.

Mill Creek

Coach: Sean Garnett

2012 record/playoff finish: 15-5, state quarterfinals

Returning starters: MF Tyler Moody, Sr.; DEF Stephen Kirk, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Sebastian Carrion, Sr.; DEF Mike Vincent, Jr.; DEF Jake Creech, Jr; DEF Ernando Manrique, Fr.; DEF Diego Manrique, Fr.; MF Chris Schuetz, Jr.; MF Josh Arceneaux, Jr.; F Waldyr Pierre-Louis, Sr.; GK Conner Buckley, Sr.; F Noah Thomas, Fr.; MF Billy Johnson, Fr.

Outlook: The Hawks had a breakthrough 2012 season with the deepest playoff run in school history that ended with a quarterfinal loss to Centennial. They lost a bunch of talent off that squad, returning just two starters in Moody and Kirk. But they have a lot of depth, which should help them return to success quickly this season.

Mountain View

Coach: Stan Carpenter

2012 record: 7-9-1

Returning starters: MF Jonathan Sayers, Soph.; MF Kyle Chesler, Jr.; MF Eric Nunez, Sr.; DEF Ben Denman, Jr.; DEF Zair Sebastian, Jr.; GK Jeff Hollingsworth, Soph.; DEF Noah Hetherington; MF Luck Hucks, Soph.; F Diego Sanchez, Soph.; DEF Carlos Ramirez, Jr.; DEF Dylan Harper, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F Zaid Carpenter, Fr.; MF Brian Weber, Sr.

Outlook: The young Bears took their lumps in tough 7-AAAAAA, but should be more competitive this season with a year to grow up. Sayers leads a creative midfield and Mountain View's defense should be solid, too.

Coach: Chris Bess

2012 record: 7-10-1

Returning starters: F/MF Austin Underwood, Sr.; DEF Jesus Contreras, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Alan Mejia, Fr.; MF Victor Munoz, Fr.: F Kevin Negbfe-Otokore, Soph.; MF Tom Williams, Jr.; GK Dilan Gonzalez, Jr.

Outlook: Despite a revamped roster --the Blue Devils return just two starters and four players total from last season --Bess has high hopes for this season. The new players, even the younger ones, are talented, which should lead to a competitive season in 7-AAAAAA.

North Gwinnett

Coach: Mike Wentzler

2012 record/playoff finish: 9-8-2, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: GK Max Smith, Jr.; DEF Daniel Arndt, Sr.; DEF Jeff Harvey, Sr.; DEF Thomas Perry, Sr.; DEF Kolby Daigle, Sr.; MF Nico Polanco, Sr.; MF James Lee, Sr.; MF Christian Zapata, Sr.; F Brian Norton, Sr.; F Kian Pourak, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: Brad Harvey, Soph.

Outlook: Hopes are high for the Bulldogs, thanks to a strong senior class and 10 returning starters from a state playoff team. Leading the way are last year's top two goal scorers, Lee and Pourak, but North is experienced all over the field.

Peachtree Ridge

Coach: Ryan Sutton

2012 record/playoff finish: 11-7, first round of playoffs

Returning starters: MF Raul Diaz, Sr.; DEF Grayson Guldenschuh, Sr.; DEF Jake Siracusa, Sr.; F Jordan Davis, Jr.; DEF Michael Hanna, Jr.; MF Sahil Mahajan, Jr.; MF Daniel Rodriguez, Jr.; MF Ryan Fitton, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: GK Ryan Breon, Sr.; DEF Marrkus Reese, Sr.; GK Josh Pence, Sr.; DEF Collin BeVier, Jr.; GK Nick Gagne, Jr.; MF Sujay Kalathoor, Jr.; F Cesar Adrianzen, Soph.; MF Pablo Landa, Soph.; F Rodrigo Landa, Soph.; F Jung Hyun Nam, Soph.; DEF Yuri Horstmann, Fr.; MF Anuj Sethi, Fr.

Outlook: Sutton hopes his team can build off back-to-back playoff appearances with a lineup of eight returning starters and plenty of depth off the bench. Some talented newcomers will only add to that depth.

Region 8-AAAA

Coach: John Schaefer

2012 record: 4-12-2

Returning starters: F Jordan Brannen, Sr.; MF/DEF Carter Kioski, Jr.; MF Eduardo Carlos Sosa, Jr.; DEF Cullen Moss, Sr.; MF/DEF David Venegas-Torres, Sr.; DEF Roman Flores, Sr.

Outlook: The Longhorns have six returning starters, leaving new head coach Schaefer and his players hopeful of bettering last season's record. Their offseason improvements should make them a playoff contender in 8-AAAA.

Region 7-AAA

Coach: Brandon Manders

2012 record: 10-8

Returning starters: DEF Willy Uriostegui, Jr.; MF Lionel Burgos, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Matt Bonadies, Soph.; MF Christian Lopez, Soph.; MF Eli Cummings, Sr.

Outlook: The lineup will be revamped after the Wolves graduated nine four-year starting seniors off last year's team. But the new players are promising, Manders said, and they will be tested early in the season with matchups against Flowery Branch, Clarke Central, Wesleyan and Apalachee.Region 6-AA

Coach: Thom Jacquet

2012 record/playoff finish: 13-5-1, Class AA Final Four

Returning starters: DEF Andy Irwin; F Max Gomas; GK Jake Doiron; MF Nash Wagnon

Other key players/newcomers: F Nate Ream; MF Davis Bryan; MF Conner Pendery; MF Zion Gray; DEF Ryan Yates; DEF George Winfrey

Outlook: The Spartans lost plenty to graduation, but the traditional power always reloads because of a deep bench. Some talented youngsters are expected to fill in for the graduated players and the offense should be strong behind Gomas, an Emory signee.

Coach: Billy Coxhead

2012 record/playoff finish: 11-6-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: F Zac MacKenzie, Sr.; MF Cort Coxhead, Jr.; GK Carter Flachbarth, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Miles Moraitis, Sr.; MF Matt Moratti, Jr.; MF Will Sharon, Soph.; DEF Benji Johnson, Fr.

Outlook: Graduation took plenty off last season's playoff team and more attrition in the offseason depleted the roster even more, including Sam Straker's season-ending knee injury. Flachbarth is a strong presence at goalkeeper, but he will be tested with an inexperienced lineup in front of him. Cort Coxhead is solid in the midfield and the only other regular back is MacKenzie at forward.

Area 8-A

Coach: Bob Gardner

2012 record/playoff finish: 13-7, Class A Elite Eight

Returning starters: F Johnny Hardin, Sr.; F Cole Redman, Jr.; MF Bailey Pinto, Jr.; MF Braden Elmer, Jr.; DEF Ryan Thomas, Sr.; DEF Ben Ungerer, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Andrew Hutto, Sr.; DEF Bryan Jackson, Jr.; MF Chris Ward, Soph.; GK Noah Blalock, Jr.; DEF Ben Austin, Jr.

Outlook: Hebron will build off another strong season with 2012's nice playoff run. Six starters return from that team, while a promising group of newcomers are expected to fill in without much dropoff.

Coach: Todd Henry

2012 record/playoff finish: 12-9, state semifinals

Returning starters: MF/DEF Tylor Marshall, Sr.; MF Bokwon Lee, Sr.; DEF Collin Moncrief, Soph.; MF/GK Jake Freeman, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F/MF Rob Clark, Sr.; F/MF Yi Wu, Sr.; F/MF Connor Jones, Sr.; DEF David Ortiz, Jr.; MF Harry Heusel, Soph.; MF Nich Hoehne, Soph.; DEF Caleb Jones, Soph.; DEF Owen Lowery, Soph.; MF John Rast, Soph.

Outlook: There are many holes to fill from a team that lost to eventual state champion Aquinas in last year's Final Four. Returning senior starters Marshall and Lee are now in a leadership position, while a deep sophomore class will be counted on heavily.

Region 8-AAAAAA

Coach: Brian Zirbel

2012 record: 10-6

Returning starters: GK Rachael Pfeiffer, Sr.; DEF Gabby Coumes, Jr.; DEF Courtney Terilli, Jr.; DEF Marissa Jordan, Sr.; MF Mackenzie Brown, Sr.; MF Shelby Pallone, Jr.; F Caroline Mangum, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F Nahisha Saint-Hilaire, Jr.; Carson Batye, Soph.

Outlook: The Tigers had a strong 2012 season, which should continue with a roster of experienced players, including some four-year standouts who played on the school's first team. They will build around a strong defense, but Zirbel likes Archer's hard-working forwards, too.

Coaches: Jennifer Crawford, Katie Eisner

2012 record: 5-13

Returning starters: DEF/MF Akua Aduboffour, Soph.; F Raven Matthews, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F/MF Ashley From, Sr.; MF Yatsira Figueroa, Soph.; DEF Maria Luna, Sr.; MF/DEF June Orocio, Jr.; DEF Pam Araujo, Jr.; F Reyna Maldonado, Jr.; MF Cynthia Juarez, Jr.; DEF Leslie Najera, Soph.

Outlook: Crawford and Eisner, co-head coaches, like the Patriots' energy and determination, which could lead to more wins this season. Two talented sophomores lead the way, including Aduboffour, a center back last season who shifts into the central midfield. Matthews is expected to be the offensive leader.

Coach: Jeffrey Becker

2012 record/playoff finish: 12-7, Elite Eight

Returning starters: MF Julia Bassell, Sr.; F Kim Fincher, Sr.; MF Fiorella Gamarra, Jr.; F Jenny Allen, Jr.; DEF Michelle Allen, Jr.; DEF Sanon Williams, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: GK Kristen Rivers, Sr.; MF Shannon Maloney, Jr.; GK Shelby Middleton, Soph.; MF Martina Juric, Fr.

Outlook: Becker takes over as head coach and inherits a strong core of returning players and leaders. The starting lineup is strong and the bench is deep, including three quality goalkeepers led by Rivers, a Missouri signee.

Central Gwinnett

Coach: Mike Yocca

2012 record: 3-12-1

Returning starters: DEF Leidi Ruiz, Sr.; MF Vanessa Reyes, Sr.; MF Jackie Finnegan, Sr.; F Morgan Smith, Sr.; DEF Jessica Todd, Jr.; DEF Hannah Supple, Jr.; F Mimi Sangosina, Soph.; GK Gracie Lombard, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F Erin Davinson, Fr.; MF Melissa Coralic, Fr.

Outlook: Yocca has the benefit of eight returning starters, including a strong group of defenders led by Supple, Ruiz and Todd, along with an improving goalkeeper in Lombard. Smith, Sangosina and Davinson bring some energy and talent to the attack.

Coach: Jason Guzzardo

2012 record/playoff finish: 14-3-1, first round of playoffs

Returning starters: DEF Kristin Kelly, Sr.; DEF Sheyenne Powell, Jr.; DEF Missy Johnson, Jr.; MF Valeria Bermeo, Jr.; MF Katie McAdams, Jr.; MF Lauren Vick, Jr.; MF Sydney Thomas, Jr.; GK Madison Glunn, Jr.; F Makayla Clack, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Rebecca Shuler, Sr.; MF Emily McClure, Sr.; F Jazmyne Lane, Jr.; MF Siara Zedonek, Jr.; MF Sabrina Seibel, Fr.; F Calen Vick, Fr.; MF Halie Hammond, Fr.

Outlook: Dacula should be loaded for another playoff trip with nine returning starters, including senior captain Kelly, from last season's successful team. Clack scored a school-record 23 goals last season as a freshman and Bermeo, a creative midfielder, had 15 assists. McAdams (six goals, six assists) and Vick (four goals, five assists) also are important contributors in the attack.

Coach: Terry Klinect

2012 record/playoff finish: 13-5-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: DEF Jessica Allen, Sr.; F Alexa Webb, Sr.; DEF Savannah Selby, Jr.; GK Cadye Picklesimer, Jr.; MF Brittney Bennett, Soph.; DEF Josie Ouellette, Soph.; DEF Melissa Castaneda, Soph.; F Allison Pickett, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Ella Stevens, Fr.

Outlook: Last year's playoff team was bolstered by one of the area's top defenses, and this season's Rams should be just as strong in the back, where Allen, a North Georgia signee, is an elite defender. Some new contributors should boost the attack as well.

Coach: Judson Hamby

2012 record/playoff finish: 11-7-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: DEF Ali Litchfield, Sr.; GK Mariah Garner, Jr.; MF Kristina Meyer, Sr.; DEF Madison Ober, Jr.; MF Morgan Fleming, Soph.; MF Emma Manting, Soph.; MF/DEF Alex Bowen, Sr.; F Eli Quintanilla, Soph.; MF Kristin Telford, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF/DEF Emily Nixon, Soph.; DEF Kyana Campbell, Sr.; MF Rebecca Swanson, Jr.; F Camille Colston, Jr.; DEF Sam Leatham, Jr.; GK Megan Wiley, Soph.; DEF Sarah Nguyen, Fr.; MF/F Katie Hickman, Fr.; DEF Emma Carlson, Fr.; DEF/F Kiara Campbell, Fr.

Outlook: Despite being extremely young last season, the Panthers returned to their customary spot in the playoffs. The experience of nine returning starters off that team, along with a talented freshman class, offers hope of advancing past the first round of state this season.

Coach: Mike Nash

2012 record: 2-13-2

Returning starters: MF Kaylee Griswold, Jr.; MF/DEF Eniola Inisanmi, Jr.; MF/F Anita Trupina, Sr.; GK DeAundra Green, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: MF/DEF Camille Webb, Sr.; MF Irma Dogic, Soph.

Outlook: Nash likes the group of younger players in the program, which should make the Generals more competitive in a difficult region.

South Gwinnett Comets

Coach: Brian Emsley

2012 record/playoff finish: 8-9

Returning starters: MF Kelly Geary, Jr.; MF Shaquira Hall, Sr.; DEF Chelsea Lavender, Jr.; MF Miranda Rolon, Soph. DEF Sade Martin, Jr.; MF/F Gaby Silva, Jr.; GK/MF Jazmyne Simon, Jr.; DEF Jocelyn Jones, Sr.; MF Fatima Tarawally, Sr.; F Ana Teodora, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Iman Williams, Fr.; DEF Nina Page, Fr.; MF/DEF Karina Perez, Fr.; MF Jessica Simao, Soph.

Outlook: The improving Comets neared the .500 mark last spring and aim to better that record this season. Ten returning starters boost their confidence, as does the return of Geary, a West Georgia commitment. She has 25 goals her first two high school seasons, including 15 last season.

Region 7-AAAAAA

Collins Hill

Coach: Jeff Tinklepaugh

2012 record/playoff finish: 13-9, state semifinals

Returning starters: DEF Amanda Bruemmer, Sr.; Kaitlyn DelSavio, Sr.; MF Jessica Dacey, Sr.; MF Paige Hoover, Jr.; GK Halla Jibreen, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Dena Cisic, Soph.; MF Kelsey Lawrence, Soph.; F Desiree Bowen, Soph.

Outlook: Bruemmer, a Georgia State signee, leads a strong returning defensive core, with four of the five regulars back. Hoover is back in the central midfield, where Cisic also will provide a boost. Dacey and Lawrence also are important midfielders, while Bowen will be relied upon to fill the scoring punch lost when Mariah Dickey (now at Georgia) graduated.

Coach: Vince Hayes

2012 record: 4-12-2

Returning starters: MF Daniela Diaz; F Sarah Miller, DEF Becca Miller; MF Madison Whitley; DEF Lexie Luther; MF Betsi Zuniga

Other key players/newcomers: MF Hannah Huizenga; GK Tiffany Sornpao; MF Klaudia Cancino

Outlook: The Wildcats graduated six seniors, five who signed with college programs, off last year's team. But Hayes has several key players and leaders back, as well as a strong midfield, and hopes that parlays into an improved record this spring. Huizenga, a Greater Atlanta Christian transfer, gives the midfield a huge boost.

Coach: Thomas Warren

2012 record: 1-12-3

Returning starters: DEF Iridian Marquina, Soph.; MF/DEF Gabriela Contreras, Sr.; F Kimberly DeAnda, Sr.; MF Rachel Hill, Sr.; GK Angela Lara, Sr.; MF Mariam Martinez, Sr.; MF Antonella Zarralanga, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Hilda Trochez, Fr.; F/MF Milagro Mejia, Soph.

Outlook: A veteran midfield gives the Mustangs hopes for an improved season this spring. Some young talent also will give Meadowcreek a boost.

Mill Creek

Coach: Brent Leitsch

2012 record/playoff finish: 14-5-1, state quarterfinals

Returning starters: F Lauren Tanner, Sr.; DEF Megan Gil, Sr.; F Alex Giles, Sr.; GK Rachel Allred, Sr.; MF Ellie Bowes, Jr.; DEF Caroline Fleming, Jr.; MF Lauren Navas, Soph.; DEF Victoria Schillinger, Sr.; MF Lora Bruce, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: F Cierra Tataw, Sr.; MF McKenzie Rice, Sr.; F Kristin McDonald, Sr.; DEF Cortney Larsen, Jr.; F Shelby Murphy, Jr.; DEF Megan Welch, Soph.; F Melissa Hanken, Soph.; MF Kristin Gomez, Fr.; DEF Lexi Froh, Fr.; GK Caroline Youngblood, Fr.

Outlook: Mill Creek's senior-laden roster and the experience of deep playoff runs the last few seasons bring high expectations this season. Seven Hawks already have signed with college programs: Tanner to Georgia, Gil to North Georgia, Bruce to Shorter, Schillinger to Truett-McConnell, Giles to Georgia College and McDonald to Georgia Southwestern.

Mountain View

Coach: Tracy Valentino

2012 record: 7-10

Returning starters: MF Ansley Roley, Soph.; DEF Nadia Aghaie, Sr.; MF Hailey Jones, Soph.; F Alea Hathcock, Sr.; GK Katy Darby, Jr.; F Samantha Moore, Sr.; MF Emily Stout, Jr.; DEF Faith Seymour, Sr.; MF Shelby Gray, Jr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Katy McCorkle, Soph.; DEF Brittney Doyle, Fr.

Outlook: Valentino likes this tight-knit team, which she thinks has the potential for a state playoff trip. Among the top returning players are Roley, an all-county selection last season as a freshman, and standout defender Aghaie, a West Georgia signee.

Coach: Judas Kinchen

2012 record: 7-11-1

Returning starters: F Jenna McEachern, Jr.; F Jordan Browne, Soph.; F Arielle Silvers, Soph.; MF Jordan Lewter, Jr.; MF Nicki Willis, Jr.; DEF Kathryn Saunders, Jr.; DEF Maddie Stephen, Jr.; GK Kennedy White, Jr.; GK Sydney Hanna, Sr.

Outlook: With most of last season's starting lineup back, the Blue Devils aim to push for a playoff spot from difficult 7-AAAAAA. Kinchen's team also should have improved depth that will help in region play.

North Gwinnett

Coach: Corban Cofer

2012 record/playoff finish: 14-7, state quarterfinalsReturning starters: F Taylor Burns, Sr.; MF Caroline Gualdoni, Jr.; DEF Caroline Shimkus, Jr.; F Raina Davis, Soph.; F Katie Strand, Soph.; MF Amanda Delgado, Soph.; DEF Devin Gaskill, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF/F Jordan Goldring, Jr.; MF Stephanie Lee, Soph.; MF/F Kendall Welkley, Soph.; DEF Annie Thornburgh, Jr.; DEF Meaghan Powell, Jr.; DEF Carmen Toomer, Soph.; GK Lauren Johnson, Fr.; Dani Shartouny, Fr.; Cameron Zapata, Fr.; Hanna Asher, Fr.

Outlook: Cofer takes over a program that has been one of the county's strongest in recent seasons. The Bulldogs lost some key players to graduation, but a good deal of talent returns, including dynamic offensive players Burns and Gualdoni, who have both started since their freshman seasons.

Peachtree Ridge

Coach: Megan Hill

2012 record/playoff finish: 12-5-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: MF Ashley Balmforth, Jr.; DEF Esther Cano, Sr.; DEF Sumer Culberson, Jr.; MF Amanda Ferry, Soph.; MF Olivia Hall, Sr.; MF Nicole Misener, Jr.; F Jordyn Missel, Soph.; F/DEF Phoebe Palmer, Jr.; MF Macey Raines, Sr.; DEF Kayla Thomas, Soph.; GK Cosette Morche, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Kinsey Dziwura, Fr.; MF/F Allie Hoxie, Fr.; MF/F McKay Culberson, Fr.; F/MF Briana Bagnasco, Soph.; MF/F Rebecca Owens, Soph.; MF Taylor McMillan, Soph.; DEF Erica Misener, Soph.

Outlook: Hill, a North Gwinnett grad, takes over for veteran coach Bill Holleman, whose team rode a stingy defense to the Region 7-AAAAAA title last spring. With tall and talented Morche back at goalkeeper, the defense should again be a strength. Depth and talent in all classes also are strengths of this team.

Region 8-AAAA

Coach: Jack Hughes

2012 record: 7-10

Returning starters: F Andrea Araya, Sr.; MF Adrianna Ramos, Sr.; MF Samantha Helmink, Jr.; F Victoria Wyant, Jr.; MF Casey Wilkes, Jr.; DEF Alyssa Santana, Jr.; MF Bethany Blanton, Jr.; DEF Maddie Corley, Soph.; DEF Brooke Gatzemeyer, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: F Amy Groth, Soph.

Outlook: The third-year program has aspirations of its first state playoff trip, a goal aided by nine returning starters. Seven of those returnees are in their third year as starters. The Longhorns were just a spot away from accomplishing that feat last season when they were fifth in the region.

Region 7-AAA

Coach: Crystal Fowler

2012 record/playoff finish: 16-6, state semifinals

Returning starters: DEF/GK Lane Crawford, Soph.; DEF Brooke Horist, Soph.; F Ceely Coker, Jr.; MF Tara Dambach, Jr.; MF Caitlyn Dawkins, Jr.; MF McKenna Harwood, Jr.; DEF Jessi Vaverka, Jr.; MF Ann Schmidt, Sr.; F Melissa Sullivan, Sr.; MF/DEF Kennedy Webster, Sr.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Isabelle Grest, Fr.; F/MF Elexa Bahr, Fr.; MF Ambria Shutts, Fr.; MF Brie Smith, Fr.; GK Izzy Ortiz, Jr.

Outlook: Though the Wolves move up a classification, the goals are high with 10 returning starters back from a Class AA Final Four team. Fowler, promoted to head coach in the offseason, inherits those veteran players but also a talented group of freshmen who will contribute right away.

Region 6-AA

Coach: Troy Bendickson

2012 record/playoff finish: 18-2-1, state champions

Returning starters: F Rachel Garcia, Sr.; MF Taylor Wagnon, Sr.; MF Kayla Puzas, Sr.; GK Elizabeth White, Sr.; DEF Tayler McPherson, Jr.; MF Danielle Marcano, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF Mollie Arrendale, Sr.; MF Jamie Campbell, Sr.; DEF Emma Davis, Sr.; DEF Brett Wylie, Sr.; DEF/MF Heather Ferrari, Jr.; MF Brynn Finneran, Jr.; F Halle Huff, Soph.; MF Abbie Abrahart, Soph.; Kaitlin Mayer, Soph.; Katie Irwin, Soph.; Perry Bitzer, Soph.; Kaylann Boyd, Fr.; Melissa Gray, Fr.; Tori Wisted, Fr.; Anne Winfrey, Fr.

Outlook: The defending Class AA state champions are loaded for another championship run behind three SEC-bound seniors: Garcia (Georgia), Wagnon (Auburn) and Puzas (Mississippi State). Garcia is the reigning Daily Post player of the year after scoring 47 goals as a junior, Puzas is a creative center midfielder and Wagnon has 45 assists over the past three seasons. The Spartans are deep, so filling in the holes from last year's title team shouldn't be a problem.

Coach: Lacy Gilbert

2012 record/playoff finish: 9-9-1, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: DEF Grace Hodges, Sr.; MF/F Maddie Hall, Jr.; MF/F Christina Moraitis, Jr.; DEF/F Hope Morgan, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: MF/F Madison Jones, Sr.; MF/F Taylor Walton, Sr.; DEF Lizzie McIntosh, Jr.; DEF Caroline Robertson, Jr.; MF Taylor Panther, Soph.; MF Regan Lochmandy, Soph.; GK Vivian McCoy, Soph.; MF/F Rene Rindik, Soph.; MF Beck Coxhead, Fr.; MF/F Ellie Hall, Fr.; DEF Megan Williams, Fr.

Outlook: Wesleyan will sport a revamped lineup after graduating its largest senior class ever, with 10 girls, last year. The Wolves will be young, but Gilbert likes the work ethic and talent of her team. A veteran goalkeeper graduated in Hannah Duane, but McCoy is a promising sophomore who will fill that role. Hodges and Morgan will anchor the defense in front of her.

Area 8-A

Coach: Calin Pop

2012 record/playoff finish: 12-3-1, second round of state playoffs

Returning starters: MF Jordan Lowery; MF Sarah Boyd; DEF Rachel Boyd; F McKenzie Towe; F Bianca Clark; MF Tyler Roof; MF Alex Probst

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Ema Garner; MF Kendall Towe; GK Lexi Kent

Outlook: Hebron had a strong 2012 season, winning the area title and making the Sweet 16 of the state playoffs, but it must replace the goal-scoring prowess of Alexa Allen, now at Auburn. But Pop, the Lions' new head coach, seven starters back from that team, including four midfielders and a pair of forwards.

Coach: Todd Henry

2012 record/playoff finish: 11-8, first round of state playoffs

Returning starters: DEF/MF Kaitlen Henry, Sr.; GK Jessie Kowalewicz, Sr.; MF Jesee Manby, Sr.; DEF Allie Petmecky, Sr.; MF Robyn Lowndes, Jr.; F Katharine Slayton, Jr.; DEF Brittany Tuttle, Jr.; MF Anna Bougas, Soph.

Other key players/newcomers: DEF Katy Barry, Jr.; F Savannah Flynn, Jr.; DEF/MF Julie Trawick, Jr.; DEF Ashlee Thompson, Soph.; GK Anna Lee Garner, Soph.; DEF Emily Askew, Fr.; DEF/MF Bekah Henry, Fr.; DEF Audrey Park, Fr.; MF Chantal Arslanian, Fr.

Outlook: Slayton (15 goals last season) and Bougas (14 goals) lead a potent offensive for the Storm, who return eight starters from a state playoff team. They will get plenty of help from Flynn, who is returning from an injury. A strong freshman class also will push for early playing time.
